Public scolding, feline edition — Leo tells on me to my mother.
Leo turns to my mother, but still aiming at me. What he is saying to her here is, “Your son is a boring human being, but I guess you already knew that…” It is a cruel alliance, but an honest one. I am being punished publicly, my failures narrated to the only other witness in the room. I protest, half in jest, half in desperation: “I am trying, Leo. I will be a better human!” He does not answer me directly. He lets my mother laugh at the television while he maintains his quiet condemnation. This is the pedagogy of cats: they do not scold, they demonstrate. And I, the human, must learn.
